i think the snake game is and always was a good way to show functional programming versus linear. you can't go straight from linear/goto style to OO, you have to understand functions first. once you get it functional, the point at which objects become more useful than straight functions is when you need to reuse code through an inheritance hierarchy. the simplest possible snake game doesn't need those properties, but add just about any amount of complexity and you soon find them invaluable...

You can argue any single example, and there will always be exceptions, but it's about degrees. Both for games in general and many games in particular, the shift is definitely towards more accessible gameplay. Even that episode: much simpler maze than many in the past, and tucked inside only a 3-hour game. Very accessible. There still needs to be obstacles, of course; that's the core of any game, as Aaron said. But it should feel more like fun and less like work to overcome them.

I think it is the same as Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. Call of Duty 5 World at War has the same weapon variations as COD 4. I also agree with greg that the audio is lacking directional and distance quality. Overall, it is the same thing and why would you pay money to buy the same item twice (it is like buying 2 of the same game, there is no point to it).

I remember some MS_DOS-looking program in the junior high school computer lab that I learned to type on. Mavis Beacon tried to teach my dad how to type, but he still hunts and pecks (however this is a man that doesn't know how to check his email either). Needless to say, maybe for Christmas Mario can give a stab at teaching him! If this was around when I was growing up, learning how to type would have been SO much more enjoyable!

Thanks for the post. I have come across Quia in search of games to use with my students on the Smartboard. Mostly I was looking for Grammar and Math practice. I briefly looked over creating my own game, and it seems pretty user friendly. I love the idea of changing games to better suit my needs. Thanks for letting me know that Quia offers more. I am going to tinker with it.

Wow - talk about a game with the appeal of relevance. The makers of this game clearly did a great job of adding glitz and appeal to a concept that could have been as boring as a middle-school economics teacher giving a lesson on "How to Manage Your Money Wisely." Not only is it a lot of fun to have a celebrity-caliber bankroll to work with, instead of one's own measly checking account, but - as you noted - a person gets the satisfaction of managing it well. And facing the challenges of managing someone else's money (especially when they have much more than you do!) can be much more fun than demystifying the day-to-day challenge of managing one's own. And yet the method for doing either one well is essentially the same. This game does a great job of capitalizing on that basic fact. Great post!

This was a very entertaining post. Seems that part of the appeal of this game lies in the way that it challenges users to create something, and thereby to feel a sense of power and ownership about their "product". No doubt the ability of this game to foster community (as in the case of your colleagues at the bank) also contributes to its success.

Is it possible to find anyone who doesn't like Ice Age, and most importantly its very adorable little Scrat?

The screen shots look like something taken from the movie and this would definitely add to the fun while playing the game.

I'm definitely willing to pay almost 5 dollars for this game, if just to help poor Scrat gather as many acorns as he can. I know he's been unjustly treated in the movies. :)

I would like to thank each one of you for your insightful and gracious comments. I must admit that the minute I came across this game while looking for the November blog entry material, I knew that I wanted to talk about it. Not only does it present one of the most unsolvable conflicts in today's political world, but from its geographical context it is very relevant to me as a Lebanese citizen, especially that some parts and fractions in Lebanon brush up into the conflict.

I really am glad that all of you see the potential of such a serious game and the place it should occupy in a History, Political Science, International Relations or as is the case at Carnegie Mellon in Middle Eastern Studies.

Celebrity Calamity could not come at a better time. With lukewarm signs of an economic recovery many people are trying to find ways to save money and cut costs. A game that teaches financial responsibility and the perils of over indulgence is greatly needed. The big question I have about the game concerns the consequences of over spending. Does the game deal with bankruptcy or the loss of credit? Strong consequences for over spending would strengthen the game even more. It does have many of the aspects that would motivate players to play. I do think it’s a great idea to use the game during employee training on finances. I was recently on an U.S. Air flight and one of the articles in their magazine was on the topic of teaching financial literacy to new employees. Here is a link to the article -
http://www.usairwaysmag.com/articles/teach_workers_about_the_perils_of_debt/
The basic gist of the article was that it was no good to teach an employee about the benefits of a 401K if they did not know why it was important to pay off a credit card with an interest rate of 18%. A game on financial literacy that is engaging can help people of all ages.

I agree with the other comments that were made...very interesting and engaging choice to teach a relevant topic. The game definitely fits into the ARCS motivational theory. It holds the learners attention, the information is relevant, the players can gain confidence as they learn more and improve their skills, and they can gain a sense of satisfaction when they win. Well done!

This is a fascinating use of Second Life model. I've been on a quest to find scenarios where Second Life seems like it really has relevance beyond the pure novelty of having an avatar representing you. (I've yet to see any studies that show a demonstrative difference between an online business meeting, or conference where having a bunch of avatars on the screen improves the quality of the event. Though I'd like to find one). So, I'm not sure in this current version of this this is an ideal example, of the added value of Second Life in learning but it hits some great points. I especially like the element of creating a number of different scenarios, where intangibles that take place before the action have to be considered. This seems like a great tool to reinforce that. Maybe someday Wii will release a Resuci Anne, maybe as a throw in with the Dance Dance Revolution stomping pad. But until then, this seems like a good step in the right direction for the current capabilities of Second Life.

Solitaire is an interesting choice here because I think it's motivating as a time-filler...something to do when board. I'm not sure whether it's a game that has much of a learning component. If we look at it from the ARCS model, it definitely keeps player "attention," but I don't think the content is very "relevant." That's probably why one of our classmates listed a comment above that said he/she plays solitaire on his/her computer to "look like" he/she is doing work. I think the game does build some degree of "confidence." However, as another commentor noted, the games results are also left up to luck or chance...this can be slightly de-motivating at times, I think. The last motivational factor in ARCS is "satisfaction." Here again, I think the player will be satisfied when they win, but often they won't win and have no control over that due to chance... This is an interesting game to think about in the context of learning. Thanks for the post!

I had no idea this software existed. I had a year-long typing class in the 6th grade where we had timed typing tests. To me, this is an example of the potential time and cost savings we can obtain by moving a instructor-led training course to an e-learning platform. Thanks for the post!

Great review. I'd actually heard about this game, or possibly a similar one - if there is another like this out there, but from your review I think it must be this. Personal politics aside (if that's possible) educational games that include objective AND historical references (including video) seemingly have huge potential as engaging learning tools. We have sort of included that in our own egame program, blending ethical issues with historical geo-poltical realities, so this is of great interest. Our approach to including this element reference historical events, but current events are obviously interesting learning tools, especially from a "problem solving" standpoint. Hopefully, the next release of this game will upgrade the award system to something a bit more prestigious. Whoops, I did say "politics aside), sorry. Great find.

I've played earlier versions of this game, not on Wii obviously, but am amazed at the number of options golf games have included to add every year. By the way I found the "the opportunities to make choices that impact the career path of your character" comment particularly interesting. To that end, I'm wondering if next year's PGA Tour 11 release will include: "Discreet behavior, self control and backing out of driveways" tutorials in the game.

Having recently doing research about photo games, I also found myself looking at safari games. What better subject to photograph than animals? I did like SimCity and SimSafari sounds like it might be an interesting variation. I too am curious about the educational aspects of it... I wonder how much information does it give about the animals and is the simulation portion of it realistic? I suppose the educational value of it depends on what info the different people in the game who give advice offer. After a little bit of quick research, I discovered that SimSafari was published in 1998 by Maxis (also creators of SimCity). I am not sure I have a machine that will still run it, so that rules out trying it myself.

This takes me back to one of my first eGaming experiences - playing Zork on our Apple 2 Plus around 1982. Then playing it a little bit in more in 1999 when I discovered it had been re-released for mac. Oh the text-base games...

When I took a Java class, a few years back, the teacher had us create the beginnings of a text based adventure to reinforce the idea of objects. I though it was a great lesson and if I were teaching Java, it was something I was planning on adapting.

What intrigues me about Genesis is the Multi-User aspect of it. I am mostly a solo gamer but the idea of a Text-based MUD was new to me. It just seems so much more complex to develop than a typical text-based adventure. And from your post, it sounds like it is growing still.

I do not know if I will ever find time to try it, but thanks for the post about Genesis.

This is a genre of eGame I recently discovered - the Hidden Object game. It started when I was googling stuff for my daughter and discovered Pocahontas - Princess of the Powhatan. She liked it because it was Pocahontas, I liked it because it gave us something to do together that we both enjoyed. After playing it a few times, I felt like it had a few shortcomings. The story behind it is kind of simple and the locations are reused too many times. Eventually, I looked for other similar games an I was shocked to find companies that seem to distribute hundreds of them. I ended up joining BigFishGames, an eGame membership site where every game is $6.99 (though I have only paid the full price for two games, most I got for $2.99 and I have gotten 4 for free). The genre of game I seemed to have purchased the most from Big Fish is the Hidden Object game.

I am intrigued by the hidden object game. The wealth and variety of them makes me think the companies putting them out might have a formula for doing so. Perhaps they have a game engine and the just drop in different graphics to create the new game.

In my experience playing hidden object games, the ones that hold my attention the most, have better stories and mix in other mini-games, which it sounds like Huntsville does from you description. Some of them even becoming hybrid games, combining puzzle and Hidden Object games. Princess Isabella, is a good example of this

I think there may be more learning involved than you realize. Maybe not in the actual crime solving, but in thinking "outside the box" and problem solving perhaps? Neither of these skills should be underrated, as they are often essential to breakthroughs in learning. And putting together the pieces of a puzzle, especially when you don't know what the whole picture looks like, is nothing to be scoffed at. As a matter of fact, my principal recently told me that there is a question similar to that on the GATE test kids take.
As for hunting, well, if the game keeps a person engaged enough to keep playing, then that too is a skill worth having. Learning that sometimes, if you just stick with it long enough, you will accomplish your goal. Now, if the game would just give me clues as to where I left my keys...

I would love to see this sim in Second Life. Having been a medic and psychiatric technician for many, many years, and now a teacher, I have had to be CPR certified more of my life than not. I've seen the changes that have come down the pipes (compression to breath ratio changes, technique changes), and if you've never had to use CPR for real, those things can really throw you for a loop. To have a place like Second Life where you can put yourself into a situation where you actually have to "use" those skills is a great tool. I agree with Matt in that a one day class isn't going to make you a skilled practitioner of CPR that will remember everything effectively nearly two years later. But all numbers aside, I still believe that performing the physical aspect of CPR is the most important thing. While this Second Life sim seems to give you opportunities to think about and choose your response to a situation, it doesn't let you physically perform the activity. I may get some flack for this, but just getting in there and doing CPR, numbers be damned, is better than doing nothing. Believe me, when you are actually doing CPR,(unless you do this every day) you have so many things going through your head that you lose count, and sometimes do things out of order. Now, if they could maybe hook the sim up to a Wii (since most of us, I assume, do not have a CPR dummy laying around) so that you could get some form of physical practice out of it, that would be ideal.

I think I lost a few years at college playing card games. Spending time with friends and competition was unique. I wonder if I would get the same excitement if I met old friends again and played cards. I'll try it out next time I meet a few of them. Is it one of those excitements in life that you lose as you grow older?

My first thought when I saw the title "Solitaire" was the board game I played as a child. We used to call it simply as solitaire, which is called more descriptively as peg solitaire. Peg solitaire has nothing to do with the card game. It involved movement of pegs on a board with holes. The goal of the game was to remove all the pegs from the board. I remember a list that classified you from "super brain" (if you finished the game with one peg) to "stupid" (if you finished with 9 pegs remaining). Anyway, it was a game with a solution, like the Rubick cube.

I think the card game solitaire is addicting because it is like a game you would use for fortune telling. Make a wish, and if you succeed, your wish will come through. At least that's how we used to play the card solitaire game.

I must confess, I started playing Farmville as well. I get pretty bored with it, but I still continue to play. I would like to see the dollar amount grow a little quicker. I'm a little embarrassed that I don't have a home, just a little rest hut. I've noticed that Facebook even offers FV dollars FOR SALE. Do people actually exchange real money for virtual money in order to buy a fake farm, fake animals and fake food? I wish the game could go the other way around, that a player could cash in the FV dollars for hard cold cash. I'm sure a lot more people would be accepting ALL of those Farmville requests.

i used to love love the Yahoo Games website. There were so many games but the Scrabble-like ones were some of my favorites. The motivation of stretching and searching my vocabulary to make a word based on the few letters in front of me really forced me to be creative and strategic.
After your great detailed description of the game, I decided to check it out myself. I mean who wouldn't want to play a character named Mr. Farty Pants? As I clicked on the link you provided, the first thing I saw was that they have a new game called "Tiger Parking Slam: Tiger, Asleep at the Wheel!" at their website. Ouch! Way to kick a man when he's down. Then again, I wouldn't doubt that some pro golfers have tried out the Tiger game. I'm sure they have their own motivation for doing so.

I found the Cyclomaniacs game interesting and actually quite the challenge at first. Of course I started out trying to do as many wheelies and somersaults as possible which ended in me crashing and landing on my head about 5 seconds in. It didn't help that I didn't really read the instructions either so I was just pushing the arrow buttons and hoping for the best. Once I got a hang of it I found it kind of addicting. I might even have my three little cousins play it when they come to visit next week. Tell your son that he got three grad school students to try it out and they all liked it. Job well done to the young man.

First, let me say hello to a fellow bacon lover.

Secondy, Im not sure I understand this game. Is it just kind of a fun, nonsense game, or is it actually more like a cooking simulation? Do you learn new recipes? If you don't prepare properly, does your restaurant suffer? Is there a competitive element to this game? And most importantly, can you include bacon in all your dishes?

I think I have learned to overcome my Solitaire addiction. Many times I have spent hours on end playing this game, almost compulsively. I prefer the computer version mainly because it is faster than the manual option. Also when I'm on my computer, I provide the illusion that I am working where if I was playing the card version, it would be very obvious that I was goofing off. To your point, I think it is the combination luck, skill, and strategy (and the undo button) that keeps me playing. You never know how the game is going to go but because it is so simple, you walk in with a high sense of the ability to win the game.

I've been playing fantasy football since 1992 when my buddies and I were in Jr High. Of course, everything is online now, but back then it was quite an undertaking. You would select your team at the start of the season by mailing in a form to the league headquarters, and then they would mail you back (usually by the following thursday) a weekly newsletter that contained all the stats and standing from the previous sunday. Nowadays, i get stat updates texted to me instantly on my cell phone, but, nonetheless, few things were as exciting to me back then as receiving that newsletter in the mail every week.

And now that I'm older, by far the #1 motivating factor that keeps me playing year after year is that it gives me and my friends a great excuse meet up in Vegas each August for our fantasy draft.

I find it interesting the need for belonging/inclusion element as it results to many people's initial interest in playing a game, which directly correlates to the third tier of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. It's great that you could share that experience with your husband and your son while finding your own obsession with the game as well.

Just wasted away my entire weekend playing the newest Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2. It's absurdly good. I'm generally not a fan of first person shooters...in fact, I think Wolfenstein was the last one I really got into, and that was in the mid 90's.
The budget for this game was 50 million dollars, about the same as a medium sized action movie. Not a bad investment though when you consider it sold over 600 million dollars worth in its first week of release. So what does a $50 million video game look like? Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=429l13dS6kQ

Having heard about the very addicting nature of the games on Facebook, I have thus far resisted the urge to play one. That doesn't mean that I don't know a lot of people that do. I can even tell you that one of my friends is slacking off in their Bejeweled Blitz play because her scores have gone down almost 50,000 points.

With all of those Facebook updates on friends wanting me to start a farm next to them in Farmville or help them with a "job" in Mafia Wars, I don't know how I have kept away for so long. I think beside the competition, unpredictability, and challenge, another reason a lot of people play these Facebook games are some of the same reasons they are on Facebook. It is free and it gives them a new way to interact with their friends.

With a game like this that has an educational aspect, I wonder if there are teachers out there encouraging their students to play it and others like it on Facebook. It would seem to have a learning element in vocabulary and spelling and as mentioned before, it's free. This may be the first Facebook game I try. Now if I can only pull one of my friends away from their mob hit in Mafia Wars.

Ridiculously hard! I wouldn't even call it addicting because it is so frustrating even from the first round! I finally made it to Round 2 but then definitely gave up because it was impossible to ever pass. Wow! I'm not one to go for this kind of game but it definitely fits the self-actualization. You just need a lot of time to complete this one!

I think this and other emergency response simulations are a great use of the tool Second Life. I could see the same idea being used for something like fire extinguisher refresher training as well. As I was researching simulation software for our e-game design document, I found a lot of people in the medical and emergency response fields are now using simulations for periodic refresher training.

Some CPR certifications last up to two years. A couple of repetitions on a CPR dummy is definitely not enough to develop the muscle memory to make you "confident" that you can perform CPR correctly 22 months later. I would argue that some learners would not be confident 22 days later. My CPR certification is technically still good and I couldn't tell you the proper depth of compression for infant CPR. I'm lucky that I can remember 2 breaths to 30 compressions (assuming it hasn't changed yet again).

I'd be interested in seeing the actual simulation. How would I find it in Second Life?

I love it when I hear how a teacher takes a creative approach to teaching their students an important, but abstract concept. In marketing, companies use concrete symbols for abstract products (like a rock or bull for financial services or insurance). It makes the product easier to identify with. I remember learning to plot coordinates in school and it was very difficult to understand why we were doing it. Using the game Battleship is a great idea to give students a physical example of how items can be located on a graph. Great job!

I'm pretty sure that this is not accurate-you can create some crazy fish. One is invisible-except for it's fins and skeleton. I'm thinking that fish does not exist in the real world...

As adults I think my boyfriend and I are simply motivated by the competition of it all. Winning has motivated me to throw away perfectly healthy fish in order to make new room for the possibility of . discovering a magic fish (not very nurturing). I have found my drive to win is a strong motivator. If my boyfriend didn't play I wouldn't be as interested. But my young niece likes the idea of caring for the fish. =)

I can remember playing something similar to this on the original Nintendo system using a power pad. It was motivating in all the ways you mentioned above. Plus the competition between my sister and I was a great motivator too! My mom now owns a Wii and it is something that is brought to the family cabin trips, even my 85 year old grandparents love it. She currently only has the sport games, but this one would be worth looking into! Thanks for the post!

Mario was my typing guru too! My mom brought it home one day for my sister and me. We used to fight over it! It was addicting and so much fun! I think the most motivating part was that it was Mario, I couldn't have said it any better than you Mario is my friend and I wanted his praise. The only problem with this game is I wanted to complete more levels quicker, and I figured out how to type faster using improper typing techniques and still use them today.

I teach third grade and I must say my students LOVE this game. It's frequently the topic of conversation just like I suppose Facebook is the topic of conversation for adults. They talk about different things that they've discovered in the game and genuinely want to help each other out. I see them jotting down notes so that they can try something out when they get home. Now that's a powerful game. This game has lifted itself from the electronic and reached into the real world by facilitating social interaction.

You should see my notebook for class and staff meetings. I am an avid doodler to the point that if I don't doodle I get bored or fall asleep too.

There's a similar game to the Bubble Spinner that I enjoy playing on my husband's cell and it is annoyingly addicting and just as mindless. We are both motivated to play because we want bragging right for the highest score. Competition is a powerful motivator!

I have to agree with you about card games being fun. It seems everytime we go camping our evenings are consumed by our favorite card game, Golf. Everyone plays, young and old, and we never tire of it. At Thanksgiving we had two different board games out and eventually I taught a bunch of new people how to play this card game. They didn't want to quit. It was the most popular game of the evening. Every round is different and even experienced players, like myself, can flounder. Even though the game is unpredictable and depends a lot of chance there are some strategies that improve outcomes. And that makes the game fun.

This reminds me of a game that I would play over and over again and then be very frustrated that I spent so much of my time on it. As I tried it I realized that is definitely the case.

While the game is great to numb the mind there is no real ability to quickly pause so it can not be used as a background game as easily as other addictive numbing games might be.

My whole I have loved playing card games with my family. When I married my husband I was surprised to find that every family did not play cards every time they were together, or at all for that matter. I think it is the competitiveness within each of my brothers and sisters that drives us to play cards, or perhaps playing cards created a desire for competition. I'm not sure which created the other. In addressing the age factor, when I am with my inlaws it is interesting that it is only the teenagers that will play cards with me at holiday functions!

As a football fan and someone intrigued with financial markets I had to check out this game and loved it! It was very creative to put two very different topics together in a game and the content was information; I wish I had played it when I was starting off in college. Two things made the game so successful: timing the play made it more challenging and true to football, and the graphics were simple, yet sophisticated enough to imitate a football game.

I have, apparently, what they call adult-onset ADD, because I am highly distractable and need complete silence when I REALLY need to concentrate, but when I have to stay well-behaved in staff meetings, I sit at the back and do a bunch of unrelated mundane tasks on my laptop that don't require a lot of thought.

I check my e-mail. I check Twitter. I check Facebook. I check my other e-mail. Sometimes I answer a question or respond to a comment while I am otherwise fully engaged in the meeting. Without these "distractions," I am likely to become a distraction to others during the meeting.

Why is this? I think it is because my mind is hyperactive, always coming up with new stuff no matter what I am doing. Sometimes this means I can't get to sleep at night, or if I do, I have very strange dreams while I do sleep. It means that if you make me sit through a meeting with nothing else in front of me, I will say things that break up the decorum. I may get myself in trouble.

Really, I'm safer for myself and everyone else if I have something to engage all the other parts of my brain that would be vying for my attention.

Hats off to you for finding this game. I haven't been able to download or play it yet (something about work getting in the way) but I will over the break. This is exactly the kind of game that those of us who have played complicated simulations like Civilization have been hoping for: a real world, complex problem solving simulation that allows the learner to really experience a situation first hand. How better to teach a subject? The only problems would be with internal bias of the game engine since usually one method of problem solving is usually favored. However if the teacher uses the game as a jumping off point to engage students in a conversation the bias would be an issue. Very exciting stuff.

I'm also a heavy solitaire player but I prefer the card version to the computer game. For me the game comes down to how you shuffle the cards, if your hot, you keep the same shuffle, if your cold, you start trying all kinds of weird shuffles to get back on track. You know its all luck, but it is very satisfying when you win and usually you have an opportunity to do something clever with the cards that sends you over the top so you also feel smart as well as lucky. I think that's why it is so popular after all these years.

I agree that when your brain is completely full from life and work that you can use a break. Casual Games such as Wurdle, solitaire, etc. are great distractions and provide a brief escape. They are also great for increasing the brain power in a fast and simple way.

Facebook is definitely a place of addictive games. I have been invited to participate in a number of games ranging from Mafia Wars to Farmville. All of which that have become very competitive among my FB friends. I thought this was interesting and was wondering if Word Twist has the same kind of following as others. I really like that this game challenges your intellect and can help keep you sharp.

I have to say that as a lifelong musician and now songwriter that this "Joy of playing" that you describe is difficult to experience from just listening to your favorite music. After becoming proficient at an instrument, you reach a point where you and the music become one, almost as if the music plays you instead of vice versa. This game has tremendous value not only in the motivational aspect, but in the truest nature of the artistic form of music.. Allowing non-musicians to experience the thrill of performing live and improvising musical arrangements. On a simulation level, I have to say that this is a pretty strong use of motivational strategies to simulate a real-life, joyous experience.

I was excited to read about Club Penguin. I don’t have children but I have nieces and nephews who see mom and dad online and interacting with others in a virtual world and want to do the same. It appears that Club Penguin provides a safe and fun environment for kids to be a part of the virtual world and gain recognition from their peers when successfully completing a mission.

I have spent a significant amount of my career working with membership groups and affinity marketing so this was of particular interest. I am looking forward to reading more about Club Penguin and sites like this especially as the paid content for the Internet model begins to take shape.

Although I am a high school teacher, I see the value of this game for children of multiple ages. First of all, you get a free program that hits on reading, writing, keyboarding, math, and picture recognition. All of these skills are essential to the success of a primary grade student. I also like the fact that the game has different levels of difficulty, allowing the player a chance to work their way up in the game. This also offers teachers a chance to differentiate their teaching for different learning styles and paces. Finally, the fact that Sebran is so multi-faceted means that it's not just about one type of game. It's got several different types of games embedded in one piece of freeware. Nice!!

Hi Felicia,

I could not agree with you more about this game being a great introduction to flying, especially for young kids. It is actually simulation games like this one that sparks the interest of aspiring fighter pilots and rescue pilots across the nation. I will give you an example, as an Admission's Counselor at the Coast Guard Academy I could not believe the number of times I had parents share with me how young applicants became interested in flying because of simulator games. The games led to the students wanting to take flight lesson, which led them to getting their private pilot's license, which led them to applying to the Coast Guard Academy with the hope of going to Navel Fight School to fly Search and Rescues missions for the Coast Guard. Amazing stories of relevance and confidence built by a game.

I think this game is great for kids for several reasons.. First of all, it ties together the elements of social networking, problem solving, and role-playing. All of these are linked together in an enjoyable e-game that would appeal to many. It also helps the player to take calculated risks in the world of exchange (e.g., coins to purchase secrets). It unleashes player curiosity by offering a chance to search for hidden locations, thereby adding to its motivational qualities. I like the concept of interacting with other players, going from place to place, etc. This simulates in many ways our adult lives, so there is an element of this reality combined with an appropriate challenge to motivate the learner. Finally, I like the fact that there is variation between the online version of the game and the Nintendo DS version. This provides another level of choice for the player, depending on personal preference. Nice game!!

I find this happening to me all the time but often for the opposite reason. If i am not successful at a game i tend not to continue playing it. I had a game on my iTouch call cubes and I did great at it. After weeks if mastering the moves and continuing to to make it further each time I played I felt like a Champ! Then a friend was playing with my iTouch and found the game... he beat my score only the second time he played it! turns out I wasn't such a champ! I from then on I played the game every once and a while but never with the excitement as when I felt I was great at the game. my motivation was GONE!

Greetings,

Let me first admit that I also am not one who enjoys e-games, and I think you are right it is the controller. I am waiting around for an e-game that is similar to a robots that can read my mind and convert my thoughts to actions on the screen. However, the reason that I am commenting on your post is because I have a lot of friends who own Guitar Hero and Rock Band 2, they absolutely love it, and they do really get into the music and experience a since of "achievement" that adds to there esteem. It has never been the right time for me to give it a try, but I look forward to the experience. Specifically because my friends call me the human Ipod, even though I cannot sing well I know almost every song on the radio including country, rock, alternative, R&B, and rap. I am imagine that I will for me the game would totally achieve the 5th tier of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, especially if I can sing along.

I think that this would be a great refresher that might be done every 6 months. I know that as teacher we are required to have a valid and current CPR and first aid certification. Often times we attend the class and never think about what we learned until we are in the heat of the life or death situation. Reminders with this type of simulation would be great!

Greetings,

As an undergrad I remember playing electronic basketball games with my roommate. He would play the same game for hours, but I had a really short attention span, and even though I love sports, I honestly did not find it interesting at all. My favorite part was trying to get a player to perform a slam dunk on an opponent's head. With that said, I am really amazed by the changes that you mentioned in your post. Personally I think I would be overwhelmed by having control of everyone on offense, but I know that this is something that serious gamers like my old roommate would enjoy. This game really takes strategic thinking and multi-tasking to the next level! Thanks for sharing a great post.

After reading your post I downloaded wurdle to my iPhone and started playing. I love this game! Its quick and easy, feels mindless but actually keeps your mind engaged and makes you think without feeling too hard. In that way, its similar to Unblockme (but with letters instead of shapes). These games pull me in and become addicting to the point where I've forgotten what I was supposed to do when I finished with my 5 minute break. Thanks for the intro to a new game.
